Lumsden Point Marine Offloading Facility (MOF)
Client: TAMS Group
Location: Port Hedland, WA
Project scope
TAMS was contracted to design and construct a land-backed wharf for FMG at Lumsden Point, Port Hedland. The wharf measures approximately 59m by 22m with a retained height of 16.5m. The main wall is supported by 55 piles at 1625mm diameter, with the anchor wall supported by 19 piles at 1067mm diameter.
Roam Marine's scope
Piling frame design & constructability
Roam Marine designed the piling frames for both the main wall and anchor wall, including all temporary support, access, and lifting arrangements. Our scope also included a constructability review of the client's wharf design.
The main wall piles were driven using a 25m-long, two-level gate frame capable of driving 11 piles at a time — reducing the installation to just 5 frame positions across the full wall. The frame was supported on temporary piles, with pile rollers designed to swing clear so the piling hammer could pass through.
60t piling frame supported on temporary piles
The anchor wall used a simpler single-level gate frame, supported on a barge positioned on the mudflat, driving the anchor piles five at a time from the side of the barge.

Access & construction platforms
Access platforms were installed along both sides of the full length of the pile wall to support welding access, while cube float pontoons were used on the mudflats to provide working access for the anchor wall.

Navigational aids
Roam Marine also designed six permanent gravity-base navigational aids / leads for the MOF, two of which were fitted with lead lights and daymark shapes. The bases were precast concrete with a bolt-on steel central post and upper section.
